Gene and Vicki found themselves in the cattle business after inheriting a small commercial cow herd from Gene’s Dad Ollie Brehm. In those early days, the two operated on a small farm of 36 acres. As time went by more property was purchased and today Gene and Vicki own and run cattle on about 600 acres in Bexar, Guadalupe and Wilson counties.

The adventure with the Limousin breed began in 1994 when Gene and Vicki visited Double J Farm for a family Easter Celebration in New Berlin, TX. As they entered the property, a set of 12 Fullblood Limousin heifers had lined up along the fence staring at them as they drove down the driveway. Vicki immediately fell in love with the breed. She talked Gene into letting her purchase a Fullblood Limousin heifer from Jendrusch Limousin. The one purchase led to 3 more heifers and the rest is history.

Today the cow herd is mostly LimFlex. A LimFlex is a Limousin / Angus or Red Angus hybrid with percentages of 25% Limousin to 75% Limousin with the balance being Angus or Red Angus. LimFlex are registered with the North American Limousin Foundation. The transition to LimFlex was made because of the South Texas location where most of the commercial cow herds have American breeds influence. Using LimFlex bulls on American cross-bred cows add muscle expression and marbling.

The main focus for Brehm Farms today is developing herd bulls for commercial cattle customers. Also marketed are replacement females that know how to forage.

Gene is a CPA . Vicki is the hands-on manager at Brehm Farms and with Gene’s support and input the ranch has gone from just a few commercial cows to over 100 registered cows and 5 Herd Bulls.

And there is more!

Double J Farm that hosted that family Easter Celebration was owned by Gene’s Uncle Alvin and Aunt Dorothy Jupe. On May 1, 2007, Gene and Vicki purchased the 138-acre property in Guadalupe County to continue to expand their ever-growing operation.

On a trip to deliver a bull, Vicki saw a small, covered pavilion with an outdoor kitchen nestled in the corner and a fireplace. Thinking that this would be an amazing idea for enjoying the Double J Farm that has big trees and 4 ponds, she again talked Gene into pursuing the idea of adding a small family gathering place. The involvement of an architect turned the small gathering idea into a massive event center that is known as Cool Breeze Pavilion. Their daughter, Lindsey Minarcik operates and manages Cool Breeze and, in the works and planned to be completed by 2026, is Cool Breeze Living which will add a Bed and Breakfast that can be 3 separate motel type rooms or opened to be one large home for a big group or host wedding parties.
